HOWELL, Mich. (AP) — Woody the woodchuck is predicting Michigan is in for an early spring.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus reports (http://bit.ly/zeAQS5) the weather prognosticator didn't "see" her shadow Thursday during an event at Howell Conference and Nature Center. She's billed as Michigan's official groundhog.

She was attempting a 10th correct prediction in 14 years.

Also Thursday, Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair to "see" his shadow, in the process predicting six more weeks of winter.

The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early.
