Luke-warm reception from Elkhart Mayor regarding ideas to improve police relations Created by jzimney on 8/16/2014 12:18:44 PM Pin It
The list of suggestions on how to improve police relations with south central Elkhart sent to Mayor Dick Moore has received a luke-warm reception.
The list of suggestions, which includes the hiring of more minority officers and adopting ethnic sensitivity and diversity training, is said to be the result of ideas compiled during a community roundtable.
It was developed weeks after an Elkhart officer was battered and beaten on Garfield Aveune.
The Elkhart Truth reports the mayor met with one of the Roundtable’s members, Adrian Riley, who is with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. He expressed surprise at the release of the proposals, which led Moore to question whether there was a group consensus.
The Roundtable has since responded, stating the letter was sent by the overwhelming democratic majority decision of our Action Committee, which has five members.
Whether or not the mayor plans to take action on the list remains to be seen.
